Hi to all, I seem to be getting these digests OK but I don't get any of the

Around this time last year someone on the list was talking about making
spinnaker cranes. The only manufacturer around makes one with two bales
(sp?) but I would prefer one with a single bale. Any body on the list still
thinking about making these?

After speaking to my neighbor about making me one I decided to live with
good enough. In order to build a better single-bail crane I'd have to get up

on a very tall step ladder in the boatyard to remove mine so he could use it

as a template. While teetering up there I'd also have to do some measuring
to figure how far forward to extend the new bail. Material is another
matter. It seems that all of the single bail cranes are made out of 3/16" SS

plate and a 3/8" SS bar stock bail, instead of the 3/16" SS plate that mine
is made out of. I don't know how well that will work with our masthead and
whatever amount of overhang we will be dealing with. Will those materials
give it enough strength? In other words, it's way too much hassle, too much
work at the top of a 20 foot step ladder, and there is too much risk of
having to do it over a time or two to get it right.

I also called the guy at Rig-Rite. He wasn't very helpful. He admitted that
his C320 crane tends to bend, but insisted that it was a good design. He
could be right, some cranes are pre-bent from the factory. He said he could
make a single bail crane, but he wanted ME to give HIM the design specs, and

the price he quoted was ridiculous.

Sometimes good enough is good enough.

Rollie,Russ,Karl & Pat, I went with Forespar's liesure furl. Yes, you do
need a new main and it should be from someone who has made the sail before
and
has worked with the rigger before. Forespar has instructions for both. Mine

has 5 full battens and is a very flat sail. List cost is $5,000, and I
got
mine installed for that. (plus cost of sail). I used my factory rigid
vang,
just had to change to the stronger red springs to suport the heavier boom,
(factory springs are yellow). My system all came from a local S.F. Bay
rigger
who had many references. Changing out the goose neck takes a professional.
I
have had it for one full season now and am happy with it. It does make for
some longer winching the sail up and also you have to winch the sail down.
A
electric winch would help. Maybe later for me.
Hope this helps, Paul, Sobrante #850

Where were you last month Allan? I just had mine
repainted due to damage that resulted from her being
hauled out of the swamp after Ophelia. Probably would
have been a great solution!
