I believe there were some Westerbekes in between the Perkins and Yanmars. Here is the info I have been able to collect. I would like to update the transitions, so if you have a boat in between, let me know what you've got!!

Subject: Re: [C320-list] Exhaust Riser Elbow

Does anyone know when Catalina changed from Perkins to Yanmar?

And, for anyone with the Perkins M30, the exhaust elbow is not custom made. It is a Perkins part and can be purchased from www.foleyengines.com and perhaps www.tadiesels.com. This is a cast iron item and seems sturdy enough. Our engine is 12 years old with nearly 1,000 hrs. I recently had reason to check the elbow, and while there is some carbon, it seems quite clear.

Running the engine for very short periods, or long periods at low rpm will cause carbon to build up faster than if run at high rpm. Perhaps fuels with higher sulpher content or lower cetane ratings will produce more carbon. I have been adding a cetane booster to my fuel on the advice of an engine mechanic. If fuels in your area are below 40-45 cetane, perhaps you should consider using a cetane booster. They can be bought at any auto supply store or truck stop.
!!- _______________________________________
!!-
