[C320-list] Location of Grey Water Tank on new C32 forCharterSurvey

Allan, the dealer raised the issue with Gerry Douglas when he went to the
Miami Boatshow. It certainly isn't the first time the issue has been faced
in Australia. There is a Catalina 40 here that still hasn't received
approval after 15 months - and the owner is understandably not very happy.
I understand there is a Catalin 350 in the same position. I'm not surprised
there is a problem with the C350 as it is always very difficult getting a
brand new design approved - but I was surprised about the C40 - as there are
several C40s here in charter survey. This isn't just a Catalina issue. I
heard recently about another reputable brand which took over a year to be
approved and approval only occurred after everything was removed from the
boat - seats, etc - and the hull was made thicker. Some of the requirements
seem overkill for a boat operating on inshore waters. Beneteau seem to get
through survey more easily than some of the other brands. I would have
given more thought to buying one if I'd realised before - or maybe not as I
really love my Catalina!

Annie - Even in Australia, the bureaucrats do bureaucrap! And all this time
I thought our US government had the patent on bureaucrap...

My suggestion would be to e-mail Gerry Douglas and explain the problem.
Seems to me that Catalina has an obligation to know the rules for the
countries in which their boats are sold. I doubt that this would be the
first time Gerry has faced this issue.

CharterSurvey

Hi All

things are progressing albeit slowly on the approval (or otherwise) of our
new C32 #1073 and we are cautiously optimistic we may have approval by the
end of April. A big lesson we have learned is that we should have got the
C32 plans approved by NSW Maritime before ordering (and paying for) the
boat. We had assumed that because our previous C32 #812 had been approved
for charter survey, we would have no problem getting the new one approved.

NSW Maritime are unhappy with the detail on the C32 plans which are 1996
plans and want current plans. However, we understand that the 1996 plans
ARE the current plans and there are no more recent plans.

A new regulation we have been made aware of is that we now need a "grey
water" tank (washing up and shower water) as well as a "black water" tank.
Apparently there is now a rule on Sydney Harbour that there should be "nil
discharge" on charter boats.

The dealer has suggested installing a grey water tank under the seats below
deck on the port side (opposite the batteries and the holding tank). We
think a 50 litre tank should satisfy regulations. It sounds like a good
idea to me. Has anyone got any better suggestions for the location of a
grey water tank?
