[C320-list] Raising a Bosun's Chair

I can't count the number of trips I've made aloft on many different masts (C320 being the shortest) and I've always been satisfied to go up on a single halyard led back to its winch. The halyards are certainly more than strong enough (by many, many times I'd say) to lift a man. The real safety issue is to never ever leave the bitter end unattended as it comes off the winch.

  Thanks Barry,

I will look for the pump mentioned. Unfortunately, it's not the connections as I have eliminated these. It is coming from the bottom of the tank. Unfortunately, Catalina was not very helpful in advice for removing the tank. They also think that the strap is 'after market'. I told them it came this way when I boat the boat new. They said they now use wood 'glassed' into the boat as a tie down?? I will try and get a tie down with no metal parts at West. I also asked whether I should put a sheet of neoprene down to protect the bottom of the tank--again not much help. Does anyone have any idea if this is a good idea or not and where one could purchase a sheet?

Looks like a mainsheet article brewing...

  Thanks again for the help!

  Regards,

  Jon

  Thanks Pat,

If it is plastic (poly), then you have a superior material for the tank
according to Calder and it should last the life of the boat--Thanks for the
suggestion on the standard impeller pump--

Bruce ...... I usually do the wet sanding the day following the last coat of Trinidad SR and spend maybe an hour at the most going over the hull lightly. Don't want to rub off too much of that expensive paint!

Petit Trinidad SR is the bottom paint of choice here in South Florida with
our extreme fouling conditions and warm waters. I've used Trinidad and
Trinidad SR several times and usually get about two years between bottom
jobs. I apply two coats to the bottom and a third coat at the water line
and leading edges of the bow, rudder and keel. I've consistently used
between 1 1/2 to 2 gallons. West Marine gets $ 220/gal but I buy it at the
local boatyard for $ 185/gal. Since we also race, I go lightly over the
newly painted bottom with 220 grit wet sandpaper. This probably nets me a
whole 1/100 of a knot but I often see the really serious local racers doing
this to their boats. Good luck!

      Hello Bruce,

We keep our boat in Dana Point also. Our dealer (in Marina del Rey) put
on Pettit Trinidad when our boat was new, back in Nov-2002. We're still
on the original paint but my guess is were getting close to needing
      new.  I'm not sure if they used the Trinidad 'SR' or some other version;
sorry I don't have that info. Have you considered waiting to paint
until the boat is here? Something comes to mind in that you want to
splash the boat without leaving the paint exposed to air too long. From
what I'm hearing from my dock neighbors, a bottom paint job will run
      about $1000 at Dana.

Have you got a slip yet? If you need any suggestions for service
providers (diver, riggers, canvas, etc) just drop me a note.

Good Luck on your move and hope to hear from you once you're here.

PS, I have a great photo of Dana Point from the air with Catalina Island
in the background. If you'd like a digital copy, let me know and I'll
      email it to you directly.

Maybe someone can pass this issue along to Mr. Douglas at the regatta.

As to my solution for the starboard lid, I used a wardrobe hook on the
bulkhead that catches the lift ring.
  http://www.catalina320.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=IDLEWILD-1998-545-JeffC&id=IMG_0549a<http://www.catalina320.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=IDLEWILD-1998-545-JeffC&id=IMG_0549a>

For the port side lid I attached a lanyard and small carabineer to one of
the jib track bolts, and an eye strap to the inside of the reefer lid.
  Hinges are in the works.

  Jon,
I believe you are on the right track to remove the tank. I've heard that you can take it to an automotive radiator repair place and they will steam clean all the crud out of the inside. Then you can see what you have. Disimiar metal on an aluminum tank is a big no-no. Also you don't want the tank siting on anything that will hold moisture against the tank or you will get lots of pin whole leaks.
Never done but came close on the old boat, seems aluminuim tanks usually start to go after 20-30 years?

  Regards,

  Jon

Bruce ..... I just had my cutlass bearing replaced while the boat is out of the water for a new bottom job. If there's play, you may want to have it done now since you may not otherwise need to haul again for a couple of years. My yard used a neat hydraulic device that did not require removal of the prop shaft.

We're still
on the original paint but my guess is were getting close to needing
        new.  I'm not sure if they used the Trinidad 'SR' or some other version;
sorry I don't have that info.

I finally got a bulb for our deck light half-way up the mast. Now I just need to get it in. WM had a pocket bosun's chair on sale, so I ordered it. Now the question becomes, how to get it up there? We have a spinaker halyard that we can backup with the main halyard for safety (or vice-versa). Can we use the anchor windlass for this? Or are there other preferred methods, like routing it over the 2 jib winches? Is using 2 halyards enough safety or are there other safety precautions to think of?

  Any advice is highly appreciated!

A safety device is of utmost priority. Tailing a
second halyard is a real hassle and easy to mess up.

I prefer securing the second halyard at both ends and
tying an ascending knot to it and hooking a climbing
rated carbiner to the hoisting rings of the bosun's
  chair.

My preference is the Prusik loop, but there are a
couple of others as well on this site.

  http://www.climbing.ie/knotstop.html<http://www.climbing.ie/knotstop.html>

Take up enough slack to practice releasing the knot
before you get too high off your toes. You want to be
able to control your decent and know you can do it
  befor ascending.

With a little practice, you can tie a pair of these,
one for your chair and one for your feet and climb the
mast fairly easily without assistance if you are in a
  bind.

  Pete,
Hydrolic would have been great. We got it out with a screw press and a very large malet. Looks like it was worn out due to misalignment. The yard foreman said he sees this all the time with Yamars. He said the mounts are too soft and when you get up to hull speed there is often a set, some times so bad the shaft is hitting the log. Apparently they now offer firmer engine mounts in addition to the soft ones that come with our boats. I would not have expected it to go after only 1000 hours. I'm hoping the freezer trick gets it installed easilly tomorow morning befor truck gets here.

? between 1 1/2 to 2 gallons. West Marine gets $ 220/gal but I buy it at the
? local boatyard for $ 185/gal. Since we also race, I go lightly over the
? newly painted? bottom with 220 grit wet sandpaper. This probably nets me a
? whole 1/100 of a knot but I often see the really serious local racers doing
? this to their boats. Good luck!

  ??? Hello Bruce,

??? We keep our boat in Dana Point also.? Our dealer (in Marina del Rey) put
??? on Pettit Trinidad when our boat was new, back in Nov-2002.? We're still
??? on the original paint but my guess is were getting close to needing
  ??? new.? I'm not sure if they used the Trinidad 'SR' or some other version;
??? sorry I don't have that info.? Have you considered waiting to paint
??? until the boat is here?? Something comes to mind in that you want to
??? splash the boat without leaving the paint exposed to air too long.? From
??? what I'm hearing from my dock neighbors, a bottom paint job will run
  ??? about $1000 at Dana.

??? Have you got a slip yet?? If you need any suggestions for service
??? providers (diver, riggers, canvas, etc) just drop me a note.

??? Good Luck on your move and hope to hear from you once you're here.

??? PS, I have a great photo of Dana Point from the air with Catalina Island
??? in the background.? If you'd like a digital copy, let me know and I'll
??? email it to you directly.
