I hadn't considered that. I would assume that the weight of the battery and hassles with cruising range and charging would be the downside of that alternative.

  Have you considered getting an electric trolling motor; which ever has 
  the maximum thrust recommended by your zodiac manufacturer? Lighter to 
  move around, and no need to store gas on the boat. Practical sailor 
  reviewed the concept and liked it.
