[C320-list] Engine Mounts

Tom, Joe and A.R.

I started looking into engine mounts and drive couplers this winter. At
Strictly Sail Chicago I spoke to the guys from Mack Boring. They are the
local Yanmar distributors and claim to be one of the largest world-wide
diesel distributors. They told me that the mounts are good for about 5
years, sometimes less. After that the rubber has stretched and hardened. The
result is noise and vibration being transmitted due to the hard rubber
and/or the top and bottom plates coming into contact with each other as the
engine torques. After speaking with Mack Boring I asked the local Catalina
broker's rigger what his experience has been. He didn't think they would
need to be replaced that often.

I took a look at my mounts (1998 #545 with 425 hours). The bottom of the
stud that fastens through the top plate has less than 1/8" clearance from
the bottom plate. As much as this engine bounces around under power, I tend
to believe that the plates are coming into contact with each other. In the
spring I'll try to get a look at a newer C320's engine mounts. Maybe someone
with a new boat can check theirs out and let us know how much clearance
there is between the top and bottom plates.

PYI sells an R&D brand engine mount and at the show they also had mounts
that looked like the elastomer mounts made by Globe Rubberworks. The R&D
mounts cost from $75 to $160. If I go through the trouble of replacing, I'll
probably try to use one of these instead of the OEM mounts. Unfortunately,
there seems to be a problem with bolt spacing. Our mounts have a spacing of
roughly 6 13/16" rear and 7" front. Neither R&D nor Globe show that size on
their web sites.

Another tip from Mack Boring. The foam pad in the air cleaner will start to
deteriorate after a couple of years and should be replaced.
