Finally taken delivery of Hull No 1073 (ordered at the beginning of May last
year) and took it for it's first sail last weekend. She should be pretty
strong after all the extra fibreglassing that had to be done to get her
through NSW Maritime Survey so I can do charters and lessons on her. She
looks great but in preparation for my first charter on her this weekend, my
surveyor friend checked out the engine yesterday and he found the following
(easily solvable) problem everyone with this engine should be aware of.
The salt water cooling line that supplies the mechanical seal and exhaust
injection is cable tied to the lifting lug on the top of the engine. Due
to engine vibration the hose is already wearing (after only 6 engine hours).
He has advised me to sheave the existing hose with a small sacrificial hose
and reattach it with a cable tie to the lifting lug. He said that if I
don't do this he thinks I've got about 3 months before there'll be salt
water all over the engine. He was fairly unimpressed with this set up. I
assume it's a yanmar issue rather than a Catalina issue.
It's interesting how the boat is subtly different from Hull No 812. The
galley drawers are smaller from front to back. I can just fit my cutlery
tray in the second drawer but can no longer fit the bottle opener and
champagne stop there as well. The shipwright said this is because the new
pull out tap takes up more room at the back.
Also, the cleaning caddy for washing up liquid etc that I used to store next
to the bin in the cupboard under the sink won't fit and my plates won't fit
in the top left cupboard above the stove where I always kept them on Topcat
2. It's just that tiny bit smaller from front to back.
