[C320-list] BOMAR hatches

Quentin,

I have somewhat resolved that problem by loosening the plastic levers a little. If you pull off the cap on the top of each lever you will have access to the screw, just lossen it a little and put the cap back on.

Can anyone address why the screens that come with the hatches (mid cabin and
aft cabin) are a PITA to install? These are aluminium framed screens with
rounded corners that fit into a recess in the hatch. Then you just close
off eight white plastic levers that hold the screen assembly in place. If
only it was that simple. Anyway, it's not just a problem on our boat. I've
experienced the same problem on a friend's C-420. You're lucky if you can
turn two or three of the "latches" into the recess in the aluminium. I was
thinking of using a Dremal or similar small tool to grind away some
aluminium at these eight points on the frame. What have others done with
this problem as I've never been able to install these screens without great
difficulty, if at all? So after spending ten minutes, or so, trying to get
a screen in place, then you have to undo the whole thing if you want to
close the hatch if it starts raining (or run onto the deck and close it from
the outside). If bug season wasn't on the way, I would put them in a garage
for storage. Those cloth screens with weights don't work well in my
opinion, so I want to get the Catalina supplied screens to work as intended.

CR: The middle hatch (at least on our boats) is a Lewmar (as is the
escape hatch in the after berth). The hatches in the vee berth and the
head are Bomar (Pompanette).

I installed the Lewmar hinge kit for the screens in the two lewmar
hatches, while I had my canvas maker fabricate cloth screens for the
two bomar hatches.

The head screen was easy, but the vee berth needed a bit of thought
(because of the shade). What we ended up doing was permanently
mounting the aft edge of the cloth screen between the headliner and the
shade. When we want the screen gone, we roll it back to this position
and secure it with ties. To deploy it, we attached snaps along the
sides and the front edge, with velcro on the "shade" side (in effect,
we re-created the original configuaration of velcro from the headliner
to the screen, and essentially, have just inserted the screen (with its
cloth frame) between the headliner / hatch and the original shade.)

BTW, does anyone know when Catalina started installing that marvelous
Lewmar escape hatch in the after berth?
