Anway, Gerry Douglas showed us the construction of the rudder at the factory
a couple years ago and showed that the lower 1/4 or (1/3?) of the rudder was
designed with no SS grid in it so that if you struck something hard, the
bottom chunk would simply break off without damaging the rudder post and
leave you with sufficient rudder to control the boat.   I think the rudder
is fabbed from a SS grid that was put in a mold and dense structural foam
was injected.

Jeff,

Did you happen to measure your rudder depth. I've never done this, but to my
eye it looks slightly deeper than my keel draft!
