Sandy,

After looking at the unit, I am seeing one major problem with the stern
mount - the length of the cable. Even with the extension added, it only
gives you about 10' which is not nearly enough to go from the stern up into
the pedestal. I'm going to check to see if extra extensions can be linked
together without degrading the signal. My other concern is the thickness of
the cable. I'm not sure if it will fit up into the pedestal with everything
else. Also I like the idea of the unit being portable (I want to use it in
the car as well) so I want it to be easy to take on and off the boat. For
that reason I don't think I want it running up inside the pedestal - too
hard to remove. I'm going to take a closer look at the boat tomorrow, but
here are 2 options I am considering:

1) Figuring out a way to mount the GMX30 receiver on one of the backstays,
above the bimini. I could then run the cord down underneath the bimini into
the cockpit and then from the bimini frame down to the pedestal ( I have one
of the side-mounted holders for this GPS) The only downside is that the
cable would be hanging down in front of the helmsperson, but that might not
be a huge deal.

2) Using the GPS 376 in the cabin at the nav station (the antenna could be
mounted on the cabin top, for example) and using a different GPS in the
cockpit. One nice thing about that setup is that I could connect external
speakers to the GPS 376 and have XM radio in the cabin (my FM radio
reception sucks).

One thing to keep in mind is that there is a strong magnet in the base of
the GXM30 antenna (the idea is that you can stick it to the roof of your
car) so you don't want it anywhere near your compass.

I must say, I really like the XM weather so far (I just got it turned on so
I am still learning to use it). The information is updated quite frequently
(usually every 12 minutes) and having surface winds readily availabe is
making me rethink whether I really want to spend money on a wind system. The
new Garmin network systems which use XM weather (3006 & 3010) are very, very
nice but once you purchase everything (GPS, XM receiver, etc.) you are
looking at about $3000 The Garmin 376C on the other hand can be found for
about $800 which includes the XM antenna / receiver.
