Matt makes a good point about falling astern.  Wichard has designed a new item called a "Jackline Safety Stopper."  See it on this page:

It attaches to the jackline in the cockpit and adjusted to prevent your teather from going too far aft thus preventing your fall over the stern.  This may be a new item as it is not currently available.  Any enterprising captain could improvise something similar to accomplish the same purpose.

Re. tension of jacklines, in a video of "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship," John Rousmaniere recommends that jacklines should be slack enough to allow you to reach the opposite rail with your teather fully extended.  That would make them rather loose unless you had a 6ft. teather.  Might depend on the beam of your boat as well.
