Rollie, do not use the pump wand when suctioning from the drain pipe. Get a proper sized hose pipe-threaded barb, screw it in place of the nipple which you remove, push the hose from your pump onto the barb and pump out the hot oil.

My pump is translucent with quart markings so I can tell when I have all 4 quarts out. Also, you can see air pockets in the oil coming into the pump. Be sure to replace the nipple in the pipe as the other end is below oil level and there will be some pressure in the oil sump when the engine is running that could push oil back out of the pipe.

Once every few years, I suggest that you drain the oil from the plug at the bottom of the pan, replace the plug, pump/pour kerosene through the drain pipe (not into the valve cover) and let it sit for a day, then drain the Kerosene out through the pan drain. This should soften any deposits and allow them to drain with the kerosene.
