It depends on how hard its blowing. To keep the boat pointing as high as possible when close reaching, we usually move the boom somewhat above the centerline, i.e., to windward. If it's gusting, you'll need to have a quick hand on the main sheet to slack off and avoid rounding up. It's a little tedious but much fun! Note that we have the wing keel. The optimum boom position may be different for the fin keel boats.

  Question for you racers out there... Going upwind, how close to the
  centerline do you place the boom before starting to work on the other
  mainsail controls for optimum speed and pointing? Do you initially
  position the boom right on or just off the centerline or considerably
  eased from that position?
