[C320-list] Sewing Machine Recommendations
Frank Drahos

Fri Nov 17 10:07:00 PST 2006
My wife has been wanting a sewing machine to make repairs to the canvas and sails on our boat as well as possibly making a few bucks making repairs for others in the marina.
Does any one have any recommendations for what sewing machine is "best". She likes the Sailrite, but the cost for a new one is more than my wallet can handle for something I see only using occassionally.....
Any thoughts, comments, and recommendations are appreciated.

Has anyone found a good source, other than A-B Marine, for the H5 Autoprop?
If so what are you paying for them?
Also has anyone considered this: http://www.smtinc.net/APApage.htm ? Looks
like a really cleaver way to get around the problem of the edges of the
zinc's going fast and leaving a poor electrical connection to the propeller.
I've seen another version that would use a standard oval zinc which I bet
would be even cheaper ( <$6 bucks per copy).

Thanks Stan
I saw your Photo Album and the C Lifts.
I did not have your email address ... only the photos.
Can you comment on:
How is their quality and
functional use?
Would you recommend them?
How long did you use them?
Many thanks again for tracing their availabiliy.
Davitts are not practicle for us due to the fact that we reverse into our
pen/slip.

Bruce,
Quality - Plastic... but that can be a good thing because it flexes
enough to be basically un-breakable. The hinges flex quite a bit so even
when I let one side slip I never broke anything. I did immediately
replace the plastic hinge pins with SS bolts though because I wanted to
be more sure of the pin staying in.
Functional use - I only had a lightweight 8' or maybe 8' 6" dingy
but if you have larger you have to worry more about dragging when
heeled. Looping the lines around the dingy to retrieve it can be a bit
of a pain. Even with a lightweight dingy pulling it up to the stern is
not that easy because you have no leverage - no big deal for me but I
don't know if my wife could have done it.
Recommend - Yes...for what they are - a cheap alternative to a davit
system that keeps the dingy firmly attached to the boat and out of the
way without extending the LOA of your boat (which I am paying dearly for
now with my new boat and massive davit system).
Longevity - The only reason I took mine off after 3 years and made
a similar system for the Walker Bay was that I wanted a rowing hard
dingy that would never need patching.

Bruce,
One little trick that I have seen in a couple of sail mags in past
couple years is to paint the screw hole area (not the mating surface) of
the zinc to try to slow down the consumption at those thinnest areas. I
don't have any good A-B tests but it can't hurt and it's a very cheap
way to try to overcome the poor design.

Stan, which ones did you get? I saw a couple of different systems on the
boaters world web site. I am planning a trip to the Bahamas' early next
Summer and don't want to carry the Dinghy on deck because of the loss of
ventilation.
Does the dinghy block your view from the back?

Joe,
There is only 1 C-Lift......."Plastic Innovations C-Lift Inflatable
Boat Carrier". Oh yeh, I forgot to mention that it covers the stern
light ( I simply made an extension pole) which I guess answers your
question about view blockage.

Same here. I've got the USCG vessel safety check sticker on the port side and the C320 decal on starboard. The Coasties are trained to approach and board on the portside, so that is where you want your VSC decal.
Here is a link to find someone who can give you the courtesy inspection...
