[C320-list] C320-List Digest, Vol 128, Issue 2

Ref: Sticky rpm cable
Had a similar problem on my new 2004 model and it turned out to be a small pin hole spray from the sea water hose next to the throttle housing on the engine block that caused rust over time and the corrosion made the throttle harder and harder to move.

Ahoy!
It is my pleasure to introduce myself as Commodore effective today
October 1. This Association is a group of C320 owners who enjoy sailing,
cruising, racing, and having fun. Catalina 320s are now sailed in most
of the US, as well as in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Holland, Germany,
Israel, Australia, Chile, and England. Personally, I have learned a
great deal from fellow members about seamanship in general and 320s in
particular. I shudder to think what the last few years would have been
like for me as a new keelboat owner without the assistance of this
group.

I'd like to express thanks to Russ Monaco for his stewardship over the
last year. Thanks! I just hosted a conference call with the 320 officers
to ensure an effective transition and Russ assured me even though he's
upgraded to a bigger Catalina, he'll remain available if case we have
any questions. On that call we set forth a couple goals for the coming
year including increasing membership and increasing the value added
benefits to our members. I encourage you to use the email list (I see
Karl Mielenhausen has already started a thread in the topic of Adding
Value) or feel free to contact any of the 320 officers with your ideas.

A little about me: I've been sailing 11 years and owner of "Seychelle",
hull #141, for 3 years sailing her an average 85 days a year. I've been
racing her for the past 2 years (and we just won our very first regatta
last week!) and try to do most work/upgrades myself usually with help of
this list. My wife, Wandzia and our two kids enjoy cruising the waters
off southern New England and visiting new destinations. We continue to
find the 320 is a perfect coastal cruising boat for a family of 4 and
have no plans to upgrade to bigger boat anytime soon so I'm committed to
success of this organization.

That's about it for now. Stay tuned for news and updates from your
associations officers. Should you wish to contact me directly I, here's
my contact information: email: mlachance at thehartford.com, work

Lately our RPM cable doesn't work when we first start up and then it breaks
free after a while. Are there any particular places that I should hit with
WD40 or similar spray? Once it breaks free all is fine. Mahalo John & Bobbi

JP,

Once you start it, wait about 5 seconds and then just give it a small
goose....been like that since the boat was new, several mechanics looked
at it and told me to continue doing what I was doing..

All:

Hadn't used 'Intuiton for about a month of Sundays (long story) and was
suprised after starting her yesterday to find the expected idle speed
(900) of my Yanmar 3GM30F was 1300. She settled down to 900 after
about a total of 4 hours motoring. I'm wondering if anyone else ever
experienced this. While it may have been a sticky throttle cable, does
anyone know of diesels having a 'cold idle' speed?

I think this is a tremendous idea. I would have used the
cutlass-bearing tool last year if one was available; I will use the Loos
gauges if they are available.

Both of these are not cheap, and not something you need on a regular
basis - I think that makes them good candidates.

All of this is interesting, but who will manage this year to year, is there
an overdue charge etc.? We change leaders year to year. It also seems that
some of the gear will be more useful on the East Coast when you have to
lower the mast every winter etc.

Cheers,

I think this is a tremendous idea. I would have used the
cutlass-bearing tool last year if one was available; I will use the Loos
gauges if they are available.

Both of these are not cheap, and not something you need on a regular
basis - I think that makes them good candidates.

I know this has been discussed on previous posts, but at that tiime I didn't think I had a problem. But evidently I do. It seems my forward fresh water tank is draining to my after tank because my after tank has a leakey inspection port and because the forward tank is higher than the after tank all the water from the forward is draining to the after tank which is going into the bildge. Any way someone had a solution to fixing the after tank leak problekm. My questistion is how did you fix the leak?

Well I was confused also as I have a sureflo pump for
my washdown system. I have the JABSCO and have been
very happy with it.

John - You are correct that the forward tank drains to the aft. I
"discovered" this after installing the Snake River tank monitoring system,
one of the best investments of time and money I have made. As for the
leaking inspection ports, I tried many things before finally hitting on what
for me has been a 100% fail-safe solution. From Home Depot, I got a bottle
of Hercules Real-Tuff Teflon Paste Thread Sealant, spread it around the
inspection port threads and no more leaks. The stuff is a little messy but
cleans up easily, is non-hardening, lubricates and is non-toxic. Hope this
helps.

Russ, why wouldn't the SOG on the GPS show the effect of tweaking as
well? In a few moments of time the current (or other factors) won't
change. (Tides won't effect speed, only current.) For example, today
we adjusted the sheet on the spinnaker and I watched the speed climb
from 3.6 to 3.8. We tweaked in the sheet some more and the speed
dropped to 3.5 so we let the sheet back out until 3.8 was reached again.

my approach to the knot meter is that it is not speed, never has been
speed and never will be speed, BUT it very importnat. Becuase You use
it to determine if you are tweaking things correctly, lets say it shows
4.9 kts, then you trim this, pull that etc, and all of a sudden it shows
5.5kts, you know you did something right, so you use it as a sail speed
reference, something that SOG can't provode becuase of the numerous
varibales involved such as tides etc...One of the things I have done is
experiment with towing my dinghy, how far back is the proper distance to
have the least impact on speed, pull it in, check kts, send it out a
biot, check kts, send it out more check again etc... -russ monaco

Stan,

Oh, I agree with you on that point...you need to perform a calibration
at some point and using the gps is probably the easiest...my point is
that once that initial calibration is done, the twain will rarely meet..

The reason I - had to - calibrate my knot meter was because it was
wrong at delivery. Full throttle in flat calm and slack tide was 5kts
while the GPS was giving me my correct speed of 7kts Over Ground and
Through the flat non moving Water..... so the only way to correct the
knotmeter was to do the' best' re-calibration I could by using the GPS
speed as a reference in flat water at slack tide at the middle of the
knot meters scale. Stan formerly "Christy Leigh" #656

>>> <Orlando.Duran at AveryDennison.com> 9/29/2006 3:35 PM >>>
Since these two instruments are used to measure different types of
'speed', they should almost never have the same reading...trying to
calibrate so they read the same is a useless process.

As the other Stan says.. It's not a linear adjustment... the 1, 2 or
whatever adjustment number you use seems to be a factor in the
calculation not just a plus or minus. So I'd say the best speed to do
your adjustment at is around 4.5 - 5k to minimize your error .... unlike
I did my first time at 2k because it made the math easy with the known
distance run I was doing.... accurate at 2k or 3k but waaay...off at 5k
or 6k - useless. Stan formerly "Christy Leigh"

>>> Stan <ola7442000 at gmail.com> 9/29/2006 2:31 PM >>>
I gave up a long time ago. It's not a linear adjustment. i.e. On my
boat between approximately 4.5 - 5.5 Kts. it matches the SOG. Below 4.5
its reads low. Above 5.5 it reads high.

I'm not really sure how this can be as the the little spinning wheel is
sort of a generator. The faster it spins, the higher the voltage it
will put out. The output voltage is scaled to Kts. It should be a
straight forward calibration, but it is not. As I said, I gave up. I
just use the SOG since I'm on a lake.

PS Moving to Las Vegas tomorrow. The boat will follow in Jan. or Feb.
depending when I get a slip at Lake Mead. (4-5 month waiting list)
