[C320-list] exhaust elbow question

I can only speak for the Perkins engine ....... It's fairly easy to take the elbow off the engine. There are four bolts holding it. You also need to remove the exhaust hose. Once off you can see easily inside the elbow. I didn't have a new one on hand. I had contacted the Perkins distributor beforehand and knew they had one in stock and could ship overnite if necessary. Although I used cheaper 2-day UPS. I did the changeout myself so I didn't have a labor charge. If using a mechanic, however, you may want the elbow on hand just so he doesn't have to come back again.

To those who have changed the elbow, how hard is this to inspect? Is it enough of a pain to inspect that you might as well have a replacement elbow on hand if the inspection proves it needs replacing? Or can you just pop the hose off, shine a flashlight in and/or swab with a clean cloth to determine all is well and pop the hose back on (oversimplified of course).

  Keon,

When I changed mine 4 years ago, I used the raised number that cast on the elbo itself. Don't remember the number of hand but it might be somthing like 960. THe sent the part and new gasget togeather.

Thanks to all who replied. It sounds as if it will be a good idea to order a
replacement elbow. For those that have the Perkins and have ordered this part,
could you provide me with the exact part number? I found some part numbers on
the catalina FAQ, but there is no mention of the elbow part number. My mechanic
also mentioned a gasket. Does that come with the elbow or do I need to order it
  seperately?

Regarding the in-line fuel filter (which is currently leaking on our boat so
needs to be replaced), what's the difference between the Racor R24S and R24T
  listed in the FAQ?
Are there any other parts I should expect to be replaced during the service?
(apart from the obvious like impeller, oil and fuel filters).

Thanks a bunch again for all the excellent info!
