[C320-list] exhaust elbow question--racor filters

Steve,

Not to start an arugment here, but that logic doesn't really hold for the
filter configuration we have on the C320 (yanmars anyway). If we had a pair
of racor filters that were the same or similar size, then that would make a
lot of sense because you could keep fuel flowing longer.

But we have one quite large primary, and a itsy-bitsy secondary.

If your fuel is so dirty that it is going to start clogging the relatively
large surface area Racor, then, by definition, the small surface area of
the secondary will is likely going to clog first anyway with all the fine
particles that slipped through.

I've heard Yanmar recommending using 2 micron filters across the board on 3
different occasions now, most recently at the regatta.

One factory tech said that the engine mounted filter was essentially there
to catch debris entering the system as a result of upstream filter changes
and that we shouldn't consider our system as a dual filter system.

The correct (but useless)answer to your question is "No". The way
filter manufacturers recommend usding this type of a filter is to have
a fairly large (10 or 30 micron filter as the primary filter, and the
finer filter (2 microns) as the secondary. That way, the first filter
in line removes most of the crap and the second filter removes the wee
little stuff.

If you use a fine filter for both, the primary filter will get plugged
rapidly, and your pump won't be able to suck enough fuel through the
filter to run your boat.

Most filter pros recommend a large filter for teh primary, and a fine
filter for your secondary. You actually need both, and neither is
better than the other WHEN USED IN THE PROPER ORDER.
