[C320-list] PHRF Handicaps

I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make....if you sail
the 320 to it's potential, AND since there's not much you can do about
other folk's PHRF, you will ultimately win more than you lose.

There are some boats that you will just never be able to beat (assuming,
as you mention, good sailors sailing), in those instances, you pray for
them to make mistakes, you catching the favorable wind shift, not getting
into any 'holes', etc.

One thing you can do, is to compete in Cruiser Class races like what we
have here in Santa Monica Bay...you start with your base PHRF plus any
add-on's...then as you compete in races, depending on what place you come
in, your handicap gets adjusted every race..ex: you have 150 handicap and
you win the race, using a formula devised by a racing guru at my yacht
club, your next race you might go off at 145, keep winning and at race #3,
you might start at 140 and so on...conversely, if continue to lose, your
handicap goes up...

Believe me, I have been at the wrong end of the scenario, my C320 at 150
and a well sailed C36 at 184 in a 30nm race, beat them by 10 minutes but
they corrected out for the win and I get 2nd place...Ask Bellezza, he had
the same misfortune this year with a 34'er that had a 189...

Orlando, what a lame one-liner. Tell us what boats you regularly compete
with on more-or-less even terms, boat-for-boat. Then tell us their
ratings.
I think that will illustrate something!

As we all know, most PHRF regions rate the C320 deep keel at around 150
give
or take, and most people seem to think that is about right. I believe we
are sailing the boat to its 150 potential, indeed probably a bit better,
as
we are starting to win races this year for the first time at our new 141
rating.

BUT, try and beat on handicap, good sailors sailing, for example, C&C 33
Mk
IIs which have a well-established rating of 138, in an unmodified C320
rated
135. Never gonna happen my friend.

If you sail the boat to it's potential, you'll never have to worry about
'better' handicaps...

Mike, just to normalize terms: the higher the PHRF rating number, the
lower
the resulting corrected time in the race results. This lower corrected
time
gives you a better chance to win, so raising the PHRF rating number means
that the handicap penalizes you less. So I would call the higher number a
"better" handicap, and you always want the highest number you can get! (I
think you knew that but the way you wrote it sounded not quite right :-))

raising the phrf number from 135 to 141 is giving you a greater handicap
as
the lower the number the faster the boat. catalina 42 base number is
around
102, 320 around 159, j105 base around 78, j120 base around 51. numbers
will
vary from depending on region and equipment and other conditions

Best thing to do here is listen to Gerry Douglas introduce the design of
the
C320 MKII:

All the talk about the splash guard is well and good, but what about
important stuff like hull and rig? Or did they just leave those as is?

- by the way we finally got our rating raised to 141 (was 135 !!!) for the
2006 season, and we are beating some good boats and skippers at that
rating. Go Figure!
