[C320-list] Cutlass Bearing

Karl,
We replaced ours while we were working on the boat in Florida. The yard
ordered one, and I ordered one from We$t Marine for delivery to CA (The yard
was not sure they could get one before the truck showed up to take the boat
away).

The now spare bearing I have on my desk is:

Morse Marine Bearing: Bonito 1" x 1.5" x 4"

That means a 1" ID, 1.5" OD and 4" length.

There is also a caution on the box that warns you not to cool the bearing
below -20 degF and to not pound too hard on a chilled bearing or you can
cause the bond between the rubber and the shell to fail.

Both the one on my desk and the one that we installed (as it was being
loaded on the truck) were brass. The metal is so thin and you have to beat
on it so much to get it in and out I'd be cautious about using something
soft. One of the problems when removing is that the end will mushroom and
once that happens you are in for a challenging day.

To those on the list that may have recently replaced their cutlass
bearing....

Which is the correct size (I believe it to be 1" shaft, 1.25" OD, 4" long)?

Did you use Johnson, Trellex Morse, or some other vendor?

Did you go with the brass sleeve or non-metallic sleeve?

It seems to be the non-metallic might be more easily damaged during the
instalation.

How much play in the prop shaft prompted you to replace the bearing?

Thanks.
