Dick,

I have the radar mouted on the mast above the first spreader. It does okay
in that position but would be beter loweer to get close in targets beter,
and since we move slow longer ranges are not as critical. Maintenece/repair
is a bit of a problem as the wiring is in the mast, also problem if the mast
needs to come down...more labor and $$$$. Not a real owner serviciable
arangement.

If I was doing it again ( I shouldt have let the dealer talk me into the
mast when I bought the boat) I would go with a stern mount or backstay. This
would alow easy service and replacement as well a give better close in
targets. I belive you need to get it high enough so it is aleast several
feet above the tallest head when it is operating, you might want to take
into acount standing on the cabin top.

Hi All,

I am considering adding a Garmin 18 "Radar and Chart Plotter to WindWalker.
I am replacing a 8 year old Garmin 215 plotter that has worked well but
getting out-of date.

There seems to be 3 locations for the RADAR:

* Mast about at the lower spreader
*   Pole on the transom
* Attached to the backstay where it splits (Questus Mount)

The good and bad seems to be:

* Mast about at the lower spreader
o Hard to run wire down the mast and thru the cabin. More windage and
weight aloft.
*   Pole on the transom
o Too much stuff there already with my dingy davits; but has a simple
wire run.
* Attached to the backstay where it splits (Questus Mount)
o Interesting but not much known. Wire run is also easy.

Any of you folks have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
