Adam, why worry about it.  Use a weighted line to measure the actual water depth in a fixed location, say in your slip.  Set your depth instrument to read that depth.  Then, set the alarm at whatever depth you feel comfortable with.  This way, the depth sounder gives the correct depth, yet you will get a warning when it is too shallow. 

The reasoning for setting the depth at actual is in the event a guest is steering, they will, in all likelyhood, expect the displayed depth to be real.
