[C320-list] Outhaul

Irv,

There have been a number of posts on these blocks being used for the
reef, which never made any sense as used in that context there is no
mechanical advantage and much additional friction.

I have always suspected that it was intended to be used instead for
the outhaul which needs a little mechanical advantage to flatten the
main in higher winds.

That said, it is pretty easy to lay down an 18" strip of duck tape
(sticky side up). Butt the ends of the old line and the new in the
center of the strip laid lengthwise. Carefully and tightly roll the
tape up. This "joint" is strong support your weight and is flexible
enough to reeve through your blocks. In the case of a halyard, it will
even reeve right on through the deck blocks and clutch. If you remove
the tape promptly it won't leave a residue.
