I have opened mine several times without the special tool. Just use a flat
blade screwdriver or knife in between the front and back halves and work
your way around slowly.
Best Regards,
John

Subject: [C320-list] ST400+ Clutch Problem
It feels strange when I engage it. Each time the wheel is turned to
starboard by the system the clutch handle lifts slightly. After a few stbd
motions, it finally disengages. I need my autopilot. I'm too cheap to by a
new one and want to squeeze the last drop out of this one, especially since
it doesn't seem like a monumental problem.
There was a wheel service kit, Part #D169, but Raymarine tells me they no
longer carry that part. I can return for factory repair for a max fee of
$225; but, must consider whether to put the $225 towards a new system or
repair this one.
Any advice on this greatly appreciated?
The manual says a special tool is needed to open the wheel ring. Anyone
done that? Am I going to need new parts?
How about anyone who has done the upgrade. Might you still have the old
black wheel ring from the ST4000?
