Jim,

I get stuck in reverse sometimes also. Especially with a brisk wind when I have been sailing at higher speeds.

As Allan suggests, you can start the engine in reverse, just be sure you are at idle rpms. No problem shifting after that.

Also, when you have a chance, check the machine screw holding your shift lever on. Mine was bent, probably from the PO horseing the tranny out of reverse!! I replaced the screw with a SS bolt (be careful though, it requires a fine thread)

Subject: Re: [C320-list] Neutral or Reverse

On several occasions when I have sailed with thetransmission in reverse I have had a very hard timemoving the gear lever into neutral when going to startthe engine. The transmission seemed to be "stuck" inreverse. When I started the engine in reverse I couldimmediatley move the lever into neutral or forward. Itfelt like there was some torque built up in thetransmission while saililng with the transmission inreverse. Is this common? I have since sailed inneutral fearing the thing would get "stuck" in gear.Jim Brown "Desafinado"--- Delia Mace <domace at picknowl.com.au> wrote:> If the prop shaft is turning because the gearbox is> in neutral, then the> bearings at the skeg (cutlass bearing) and gearbox,> and the water seal at> the gearbox (it's got a name), are wearing and there> will be water dripping> into the bilge through that bearing.
