In refinishing our solon table, I first tried a water-based varnish I bought at Lowes. I didn't like the way it went on. It was very thin and didn't look the way I thought it should. I then bought the Target Coatings product. It is much better. The consistency is better and it goes on more easily. Do follow Target's thinning instructions and brush recommendations. I believe I actually used a paint pad with good results. Test your application method on a junk piece of wood before starting on the final objective.

My pleasure with the final result is, I think, due to the sanding of the old varnish to a very smooth surface. I don't remember the details exactly. I think I started with 220 and finished with 320 wet.
