[C320-list] Neutral or Reverse

Quentin,
I'll bet our boats were in the factory together.
I just made that number up, not sure how fast you need to be going to get the engine started, it might be less.
There are some transmissions, not sure about ours, that when you put it in forward it can still free wheel in forward and when in reverse it can still free wheel in reverse.

Bruce,

Other than my boat going three times its maximum hull speed, it there any
other reason not to put the trany in forward when sailing with the engine
off? I know your boat is newer than mine, but not by much.

Give a deisel air, fuel and heat (compresion) and you have a running engine.
When sailing with the trany in forward once you get to 24.7 knots the engine
will start. Used to be how I started most of my cars...

Some have said "Neutral or Reverse", but not never "Forward". Why not?
Does it damage the gearbox or cause the engine to suck in water through the
exhaust or what?

Lots of discussion. Little data.

Been too windy in the Keys to try to get data (25 gusting 30 is fun sailing
but too inconsistent to get data that will probably differ by decimal
knots).

Numbers, anyone?
