Oh my God, sometimes you guys overthink things wayyyy too much...

I have yet to hear about any grounding or refueling problems with these
generators....I would run this thing for a couple of hours and I would
refuel using unleaded gas (gasp) that I had exclusively for this..

I would hook it up to my shore power cord and use the electric charger to
top off the batteries--no issues at any time.

Paul, set it up so the exhaust goes out thru the swim ladder and that's
it, really!

I would imagine that others who have this type of generator would tell you
the same thing...

I would be very hesitant to use a portable gasoline generator on a
fiberglass boat. See
http://newboatbuilders.com/docs/portable.pdf
for some safety thoughts (but not much on grounding)

This document says ground it to the "hull" if you do it. Read that to mean
keel or water in our case
http://www.fao.org/docrep/009/u3391e/U3391E04.htm

While the green Equipment Grounding Wire in the cord will carry fault
currents that might occur in the load and trip the generator's circuit
breaker as it should, I would expect significant static buildup if you
don't
have some path from the frame of the generator to the water. This could
startle you or damage electronics. It also could light the gas vapors if
you
try to refuel on the boat (Bad idea)

I recently purchased a small (1200 watt) portable generator to have
on-board
for anchoring out.

The manufacturer recommends grounding the generator while in-use to
prevent

static build-up and shock hazard.

Does anyone have any experience or how-to suggestions ?

I suppose one could dangle a wire into the water to do this, but I thought
I
would show my lack of electrical knowledge and ask the group for
suggestions.
