[C320-list] Mainsheet Technical Articles

If your wheel brake won't work, you better check and make sure you don't
have a larger problem, i.e. a loose wheel shaft. I'm just going through
this. It began as a mere problem of the wheel brake not "locking" the
wheel, and morphed into the shaft itself moving fore and aft a good 3/4 of
an inch. I talked to Will Keene, the President of Edson, last Thursday at
the Annapolis boat show. He is pretty sure that although loose, the shaft
won't come all of the way out, however he agrees that the shaft needs to be
resecured asap. That involves removing the compass and resetting one or
both small set screws that hold the shaft in position vis a vis the steering
sprocket over which the chain connects. This is what keeps the shaft from
moving fore and aft. Currently, one or both of those set screws must be
loose or missing on my boat. There are little dimples in the shaft that
accept the points of the set screws (which you tighten with an Allen
wrench).

The wheel brake was not tightening the wheel because as I screwed it down
with the shaft loose, the shaft just moved aft with each turn. The shaft
must be locked in position, in terms of fore and aft movement, in order for
the wheel lock to work. Planning to make this repair tomorrow . . .

I too love my wheel brake. I use various pressures for different sea
conditions, and, like others, tighten it down when out solo and need to
leave the
wheel.
