Dear Catalina 36 listers,

It's been interesting to read the comments of 36 owners about our new model, the 375.

Yes ,it is a new model not a Mark III 36. This is at the request of the dealer network and we must respect their opinions and give them what they need to be competitive.

It seems that everyone who feels strongly about keeping the 36 in production already has one. Of course we would be delighted to keep building 36s for another 24 years and another 2305 hulls. It would be cost effective and require no new tooling. If anybody is sentimental about the 36 it's me , it is the first boat I designed for Catalina , I owned one for 5 years , raced it ( very successfully ) and cruised it enjoyably.

The 375 will have some of the best features of the 36 and some of the best features of the new models in the Catalina current line. Renderings of the 375 were presented to the Dealers in Annapolis and the reception was very positive, It's a pretty boat, sleek and has a great, symmetrical, somewhat traditional interior.

The cockpit is classic Catalina ( big ) The weather decks are wide , shrouds inboard, long genny tracks, etc. The 375 is 37'4" long , hull length, I just couldn't get everything in at 36 feet.

I would encourage the 36 Association to consider including the 375 in the Association , new members are important to the long term well being of the Association and a new model will provide a steady stream of new members.

I have listened closely to 36 owners for many years and read your postings on the list regularly, I welcome your comments ( I am a little surprised at some of the comments about a boat you have not seen, what's that about? )

We are acting in the best interest of the Company , Catalina Dealers and ultimately Catalina Owners.

I look for ward to seeing you at a Boat Show in the future.

  Good sailing, Gerry Douglas

  Duane,

That's EXACTLY what I do when I step aboard a new boat. I'll spend more time looking at an anchor locker and stem fitting than I will a head or galley. Oh well....to each his own.

I well remember one visit to the Annapolis show when right after I finished surveying the cockpit, I stepped to the side deck and walked forward, inspecting every piece of rigging and gear as I went. The salesman seated in the cockpit said I was the first one he had seen do that. I guess everyone pretty much just went below to look at the "furniture, beds, kitchen, and bathroom."

Note that the comments are about the interior, as opposed to sail plan, rig design, or how the boat will sail. That's how the Hunters and Catalinas design boats these days. Interiors sell boats. Too bad,

    Tom,

One of the dealers reps at the show said they had ask Catalina to wait until they had "something to show the public" given all the speculation about this. He did say that the boat would be bigger, with more room in forward cabin, head and galley. He indicated that the lines would remain "classic". Also said everyone could look at something before the end of the year.

He also said the 36 lay out would remain, just be improved.

Anyone heard more on the Catalina 375? The suspense is killing me....any pictures of the line drawings or specs other than it being called a Catalina 375? (which BTW is just about the same length of our C36 overall length which is 37' 4" overall) I am hoping that its just an updated C36 with slight modification but still "Classic" sleek-like hull lines -- not like an overinflated 350 which is already overinflated

what would be nice is if someone could take a picture of whatever drawings or specs Catalina has to show and posts them on here

Just left the Annapolis show. The word was that there will be an announcement during the show, but that there will be a new 375 rolled out in the spring that "will contain the best features of the 36 and 38." Some of the Catalina staff claim to have seen pictures.

I suspect that the announcement may be made at the reception tomorrow night. Unfortunately I plan to be over at the Seven Seas Cruising Association gam tomorrow and won't be there.
