Bruce,
I think shutting it down was the right thing to do unless it is vital for safe 
navigation.
When the sound changes or any of the indicators are off there is something very 
probably wrong.  While it will not always be serious, i.e., expensive it will 
almost never go away on it's own.

We were in a hurry to get home and the wind was light but, with no engine,
we had to take our time and sail/ghost to the slip.   The displayed temp has
always stayed at 180 degrees (as it did through most of this trip) so the
change could also be a potential gauge or sender problem, something else
that I'll have to investigate.  Someone asked why shut down the engine when
the temp was low instead of high - I wasn't sure what the problem was (could
have been loss of coolant and the sensor won't work on air) - so, rather
than risk an expensive engine repair, I decided to shut the engine down
until I had time to check everything.  Thanks for everyone's suggestions,
I'm going down to the marina this morning to see what I can find.

Why were you motoring if there was a breeze?  It's a sail boat for
goodness sakes.

We motored home today at 2,800 RPM's for about 3 hours.  The temperature
gauge read 180 degrees for about 2.5 hours but the next time I looked it
had
dropped to about 140-150 degrees.   I shut down the engine, was able to
catch a small breeze and used the motor just to get into the slip.
Engine
is a Yanmar.   I'm thinking the thermostat was stuck open.  Does anyone
have
any other thoughts, suggestions or experience with this situation?

I wonder if the 130 degree reading is a true reading.  It is possible that 
either or the sender and gauge may have been changed over the years and may 
now be giving an erroneous reading.  Has anyone actually measured the water 
temp with an external thermometer.  I think we all would like to take these 
gauges as being gospel but I think that it is more a case of being a 
relative indicator.
