Robert,
We keep our 1 gal fuel can for the out board in the anchor locker, along with the propane cans for the barbaque. For the later we made holders out of 4" PVC pipe.
In my view the fact that the anchor locker has a drain at the botom directly overboard makes is safe.

We chained the gas tank to the dinghy seat and leave it there.  I 
wouldn't store gasoline anywhere belowdecks.  If I had to carry it 
aboard our 320, it would be in the cockpit.
