Well, the birds have found my boat and called it home. I've since moved
to
another mooring and got it pretty much cleaned up but am now seriously
considering how to prevent this from happening again. I'm thinking bird
spikes
on the spreaders are the best solution and found serveral on the web
even had
someone donate a box of industrial stainless steel ones but I'm afraid
those
would shred my sail. What have the members of this site used and would
reccomend?

  Thanks

Due to a misfortunate event this summer, I managed to bend one of the SS
Handrails on our boat. In contacting Catalina parts department, Chris
advised the do not sell individual handrails. They are sole in pairs
only. After receiving the replacement, I find that both port and
starboard handrails are identical. They fit either side.

If anyone has a need for a SS handrail, I have a spare sitting in my
basement in the original packing tube ready for shipment. Catalina's
part number is 29093 and their price is $217.75 per pair plus shipping
costs.

I have eliminated almost all bird problems with sheets of "Bounce" it
will keep them away from sail covers, etc. and most of the boat. I also
tie one to the top of the dodger.

I don't know why Bounce keeps the critters out, but for several years I
have
been cutting strips and placing them on the twist locks for the sail
covers.
Does a great job of keeping the mud daubers out of my sail.

Regarding Birds.
If your problem is little sparrow sized birds, look into the ends of
your boom. You may find a nest in there. Clean out the nest, block the
ends with cloth and the birds will go away. At least they did for us.
If they are seagulls, they may be attracted by any sort of edible or
decomposing matter on the deck, cockpit, or in the lockers. Clean that
up and they may not stick around.

Best Luck, SteveG

Len, received an e-mail regarding Bounce some years ago. It works
wonders. I also keep one inside the outboard motor and grill covers.
And, it will remove any musty smells from below deck. At home, it keeps
cats from our sliding door deck screens! Just Google "Bounce" on the
internet.

I've been unusually busy this year. Besides my teaching the Navy has me
training culinary specialists (including they are flying me to Pearl
Harbor on Friday and then I am riding a destroyer back to San Diego to
train people on board), I have been elected to the Board of Directors
Chefs Association of the Pacific Coast, I have been writing a monthly
column for The Culinarian, and I have overall just been busier then last
year.

On a rather windy day we were entering our slip under power with fenders
over the side tied to the hand rail. There was a cross wind from the
port side and one of the starboard fenders caught an upright that
supports the catwalk. The 3/8" braided line (old jib sheet from
previous
boat) parted. I think the breaking strength of the line was somewhere
around 2000#. Result was a sharp bend in the SS tube of the handrail.
We did recover the fender though.

Here in Sydney I've been using a plastic owl hoisted on the spinnaker
topping lift to about face high with a line to the starboard rear side
of the pulpit. It cost $A48 and after cutting off the moulded in perch it
has worked fine. It swings 2-3 feet in either crosswise direction
-----just make sure if you leave the spinnaker pole on the mast that it
is high enough to clear it . One of my more cynical crew members said
it would keep off all the plastic birds---but it works very well on all
the real ones too.

Michael,
Do you have Courmorands or other nasties that sit atop your mast in
Sydney? Will the swinging owl discourage mast sitters as well? Rollie

I just took my manager out for a day sail. He's from a sailing family,
but
never sailed anywhere near the Pacific. A couple of beers in light air
and
hors d'huevers with the spin up, he wants to move west. The harbour
porpoises were all around us as we ghosted along at 3.5 kts. What a day,
mid
70's and and we all got too much sun, but not too much wine once we were

dockside.

I love sailing!

Rollie---we do have pelicans as well as seagulls particularly as the
marina also incorporates a restaurant and a cafe and they scrounge
around for scraps. The owl is about 18 inches long and has particularly
piecing eyes--- I have had no problems at all since it took up guard
duties whereas previously there was always bird poo around the
deck-----for Australian readers I bought it from Whitworths

To me it seems you are getting more water in than I get. I don't have
any
stanchion leaks, maybe that's the difference. I can't think of where you

would be getting all that water from. I have my fridge drain plugged
and
unplug it and drain it into a jug when we wash down the fridge
