[C320-list] Remote oil filter

Once the system was pressurized after a filter change, I doubt the oil would
drain from the hoses. Even if it did, the cold-start-trick is to crank a
few seconds with the fuel shut-off pulled out. This should get the oil
moving and give the cylinders a good wipe. Then push-in the fuel shut-off
and off she goes. There is always a film of oil left on the cylinder walls
that persists for quite a while until the next start. Even if the hoses did
have to fill on start-up, it would happen so quickly that I shouldn't think
it would be a problem. If it were, why are these things being sold and
bought?

Warren,

With that remote filter wouldn't you end up with 30" (or maybe even 60") of
empty hose that has to fill after you start the engine? There might be a
valve in the adapter that would keep the system primed (assuming it wasn't
clogged by diesel contaminated oil), but I'd make sure of that before I
installed the kit.

I have the Perkins engine. I've not been able to change the oil filter
without making a mess no matter how I stuff the absorbant material.

I've looked into a remote oil filter and found one at jcwhitney.com. It's
called an "Oil Filter Relocation Kit." About $50. Turns out the threads
on
the std. US screw-on oil filter are 3/4" X 16tpi. There is an adaptor
plate
that screws onto the engine in place of the filter with a hose attachment
to
the new filter housing. It comes with 2 assembled 30" hoses with
fittings,
all mounting hardware and instructions. I think it's just what Dr. Diesel
ordered, however, I've not found enough room within the engine compartment
to mount the damn thing where it would be easier to get at than the
current
  horizontal filter.

I don't think there is any design issue with a remote filter. Generally,
the more oil you carry in the engine the better it is. That's partly why
a
duel filter arrangement is better than one filter. It's probably more
important that you use the mfgr's recommended filter than that it's
remotely
  located.

If anyone has done this, I sure like to know how you mounted the remote
  filter.
