[C320-list] 4 D Battery Replacement

Tony,

I got 9 years out of my original set of Interstate 4Ds and am going on 5
years with the West Marine set. However, the cycle time before charges are
necessary is now shorter with the West Marine batteries than when I retired
the Interstate batteries. Be sure to order the commercial 4Ds from
Interstate.

I use the boat 6 months a year and every weekend, but I do not leave the
charger on all the time. I also have the original charger and experienced
no problems, but then again, I cycle the charger on and off each weekend
rather than overcharging the batteries.

I know this question has been on the site before. But what is the average
life expectancy for a 4 D Battery.? I?know mine are at least 5 years old
maybe closer to 6-7 the PO replaced them.??

I am also looking for a? good source for?them other than West Marine. I keep
her?in Annapolis, MD.

I have kept them filled with distilled water, charged up all year round
except for one season (on the hard) and I have a Freedom 20 (Xentrax
charger).

They seem to be in good shape now but I feel that I am living?borrowed time.

I am also looking forward to meeting you all in Aug been on this site for 5
years now and?it has been great.??Just wanted to?add I?hope OD does not wear
that thong or what ever it is I am not sure Annapolis is ready for
that.........??

Thanks ???

Karl - Do you still have Gerry's e-mail re: keel bolt torque specifications?
When I bought a new computer in December, I lost what he sent to us.
Perhaps if you still have it you can post it here for Jeff. - Allan

Allan

Gerry usually monitors these mail lists so if he disagreed with you I
suspect we'd have heard from him. I'm going to email him about checking the
torque on my 387 as part of the initial commissioning, so I'll ask about the
320 again just to make sure.

Jeff - My source for the keel bolt torque setting is none other than Gerry
Douglas. At the factory tour a few years ago, he misspoke when he said
something else. Karl questioned him later and then I followed up with
him,
reminding him that he had said something else at the tour. He clarified
that he was speaking about a different boat. One of our members has used
the 235 setting and while a challenge, was able to get it torqued to 235.

  Allan,

Just off the top, I thought the proper torque was something like 105 foot
pounds. If that is the case, 235 pounds might tear the bolts right out of
the keel. You might want to check your source.

Warren - The proper torque for the keel bolts is 235 foot pounds. The
  boat
must be out of the water with at least 70% of its weight supported by
the
keel. The Association has the torque wrench, socket and extension bars
as
    part of the loaner program.

What is the proper torque for the keel bolts?
