Thanks Allen, I went below Saturday while a crewmember shifted into reverse
about 12 times. Every time it engaged correctly. You are probably correct
that I will need to adjust it a bit as most times it does engage. Just once
In a while it doesn't.

Joe - I went through this last year and the fix, if it is the linkage, which
it was in my case, is not easy.  On the port side of the transmission is a
lever that goes into the transmission.  Pushing the lever forward puts the
transmission in reverse and vice versa.  The lever is controlled by the
cable.  The first thing I would suggest you do is make sure you can get the
transmission to engage by manually pushing the forward and backward several
times to see if you get a full engage of the shaft.  If not, the problem may
be in the transmission.

But let's assume the problem is with the linkage.  The end of the cable
threads through a pin on the lever on the transmission and is held fast with
a cotter pin.  Remove the cotter.  Next remove the pin in the lever that the
end of the cable is threaded into.  This will take some effort to get that
pin out.  When putting it back in, soap it up real good so you can easily
remove it the several times you may need to do so during this exercise.  

Now come the tough part - trial and error of just how far to adjust the
cable back and forth in that pin.  Make an adjustment, put everything back
together (except for the cotter) and, from the helm (really helps to have an
assistant so you can see at the transmission what is going on), shift the
transmission into forward and reverse.  It took me a good 2 hours to finally
get the threading correct so that the transmission would shift as it is
supposed to do.  In my case, no amount of adjustment of the end of the cable
into that threaded pin on the end of the lever worked.

Where the cable enters into the area alongside the shaft is a steel plate
with a clamp that the cable runs through.  I  finally removed the clamp,
moved the entire cable (can't remember if I went forward or aft) maybe 1/16
of an inch.  Two tries and I finally had the transmission linkage working
the way it was intended and no more problems after a year in use.

The point of all the above is that this is a tedious and delicate operation.
Bring your patience and be prepared to give it a few hours.  The best thing
is that there is no reason to try adjusting from the end of the cable that
goes into the shifter.  I took everything apart at the binnacle thinking
that might be an easier strategy but it wasn't.  Stick to the above
(assuming it is linkage adjustment that is causing the problem) and you
eventually should be able to get a fix.

 I was backing into a slip last Saturday and when I put the gear into
reverse nothing happened. I did hit the boat in front of me causing minor
Gelcoat damage. Can anyone tell me where to look to adjust the linkage? It
does not happen every time, just sometimes.
