Yes. If the batteries are strong enough to turn the engine over with the
compression releases activated you can start the engine. If there is enough
to get the engine started then there should be enough for alternator field
excitation and you will also be able to charge your batteries. A dedicated
start battery gets around this issue, though I don't have one and have never
had to use the compression release technique so I can't tell you what is
enough voltagewise. Be sure the fuel cut off is not pulled before you use
the last of those batteries. Happy starting!

The Yanmar's have three little lever's on the port side of the valve cover.
When flipped to stern they lift the exhaust valve (I think it's the ex.)
anyway it is a true compression release and allows the engine to spin up
under no compression load. This takes two people or a starter jumper. Open
the compression release levers, spin up the engine, close the compression
release levers one at a time and the first firing cylinder will drag the
rest to life. If all else fails this info. is in the Yanmar service manual.

The Yanmar can be started by releasing the compression on 2 of the
cylinders. The battery jumper can then spin the engine. Once the single
cylinder is firing you can engage the compression on the other two
cylinders.
