Hi Karl,

When I first purchased Odyssey I went out and purchased (10) FRAM PH3593A
filters but before I used any I noted that the engine warranty was void with
any other filter besides the Yanmar.  So I did some general research and
heard some very negative comments regarding the FRAM filters.  My marina is
an authorized Yanmar dealer and the price in the store for a new 3GM30F was
over $7K at that time and there would be a minimum of several thousands of
dollars more for the labor to replace it.  It doesn't make sense to even
risk damaging an item that is worth that much for something that has a price
differential of less than $5.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, remember that just because a filter  
fits, doesn't mean it is well suited for this application.

Commonly used substitutes for the "official" Yanmar 119305-35151 are:
Fram PH3593A
Fram HP15
PureOne L14459
WIX 51064
NAPA 1064
and perhaps many more.

The Yanmar, WIX, HP15 Fram, and, I believe, the NAPA all have higher burst  
pressures and a higher bypass pressure that Yanmar mechanics have  
indicated are necessary.
Of course, I have heard of the official Yanmar filters also bursting  
(albeit in a much larger engine) but do you really want to save $2-3 here?

I'd be interested in hearing about our owners first hand experience with  
any of these aftermarket brands.

In the meantime, Bay Shore Marine (one of the displaying vendors at last  
weekends Regatta) has some of the best parts prices I've seen. For
