[C320-list] C320-list Digest, Vol 177, Issue 1, Black carbon soot

Allan,

I think you are correct. I have to change the washers around my
injectors--the symptom is a very small amount of unburnt fuel that actually
vaporizes due to the high pressure as it leaks out. The only way I
discovered this was taking a cloth and wiping around the injectors. I had a
mechanic take a look and confirmed my diagnosis. He said these washers are
under extreme pressure and they wear over time--but certainly no soot. If
your engine is around 10 years old, you may want to check for this. It is
not something that has to be addressed right away, but worth checking
nonetheless--

Regards,

This response puzzles me. Soot would come from burned fuel, right? The
injectors are feeding unburned fuel to the cylinders, right? So how does
soot come out of a loose injector? It would seem to me that a loose
injector nut would result in a spray of fresh fuel, not soot. What am I
missing here?

I had the same problem. The nuts holding down the injectors get loose and
that causes the soot. Try just tightening the two nuts on each injector.
That solved my problem.

Rick, use 15w40 API rating: CF (I personally use Castrol). The capacity is
2.6 quarts. You can also use an STP oil filter (S2808) instead of paying the
extra bucks for a Yanmar. As luck would have it, this is the same oil filter
on my wife's Kia Optima. Hope this helps.

Rick, use 15w40 API rating: CF (I personally use Castrol). The capacity is
2.6 quarts. You can also use an STP oil filter (S2808) instead of paying
the
extra bucks for a Yanmar. As luck would have it, this is the same oil
filter
on my wife's Kia Optima. Hope this helps.

I have the manual, it is really thick but only because it is in about 12
languages. Most of the stuff I'm really interested in it says specialized
knowledge required please contact your dealer...would be nice to find a
source for the shop manual.

Orlando,

I bought the boat used and I don't have a manual or I would have looked in

I ordered the Yanmar shop manual through my yard. I insisted it be a
genuine Yanmar product...no Seloc, Chiltons or what have you.
I think I paid about $35 for it which didn't seem too bad, although
you may be able to order it through other sources and maybe cheaper.

I have fixed my engine starting problem. Turns out all the switches inside
the Navpod were corroded and needed to be replaced including the Bus Bar
terminal. Water intrusion was the cause.

Never ends though as I was motoring out for a Sail Sunday and a passenger
went below and said is there supposed to be black smoke coming from the
engine? I shut the engine off, went below and the entire engine compartment
was filled with black carbon smoot. I have no idea where it came from or
where to look for a cause. The engine is the 3GM30F Yanmar and my boat is a
2000 model bought new in September 2001. A crewmember started the engine
while I looked from the Aft cabin and it appeared to be coming off the top
of the engine.
Any thoughts? I usually run a bit higher RPM's than some on this list not
hesitating to run at 3200 RPM for long periods so I never thought about
buildup due to running long periods at low RPM's.
Please HELP!

Bob,
Thats a great price for the service manual. Where did you buy it?
The $84 price tag from Torresen has always held me back from buying it....

The operating manual is cheaper @ $25...

Hi Joe,
?
I'd start with the rubber exhaust hose coming of the exhaust elbow going
down to the muffler.. If not then perhaps
the exhaust elbow itself. It is probably wrapped with some heat resistant
material, take that off and look for rust-through. You may also see some
tail tail signs of water dripping from the elbow. If so, good chance there
is a hole in the elbow. If it is a Catalina
part, stainless, then you may be able to get a weld. If not, order it from
Catalina. In my case I had to send it the old
part in to them to make an exact duplicate. If it is a Yanmar part, order a
new one. The elbow is attached to the exhaust
manifold on the back of the motor. Best of luck.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, remember that just because a filter
fits, doesn't mean it is well suited for this application.

Commonly used substitutes for the "official" Yanmar 119305-35151 are:
Fram PH3593A
Fram HP15
PureOne L14459
WIX 51064
NAPA 1064
and perhaps many more.

The Yanmar, WIX, HP15 Fram, and, I believe, the NAPA all have higher burst
pressures and a higher bypass pressure that Yanmar mechanics have
indicated are necessary.
Of course, I have heard of the official Yanmar filters also bursting
(albeit in a much larger engine) but do you really want to save $2-3 here?

I'd be interested in hearing about our owners first hand experience with
any of these aftermarket brands.

In the meantime, Bay Shore Marine (one of the displaying vendors at last
weekends Regatta) has some of the best parts prices I've seen. For
example....

Awesome thanks

I only paid 8$ for the filter so seemed pretty reasonable to me

I bought this one:

http://shop.torresen.com/ships_store/?p=details&ident=161791

Seems to be just as good as the manufactures. The price has gone up $10
since I bought it.

Rick,

Interesting. 124550-35110 crosses to the 3HM engine.
I believe this series was only produced from 1980 to 1983 when it was
replaced by
the 3GM30.
From the picture I saw on eBay, the 124550-35110 looks like the old
version of the 3GM oil filter (which is the 119660-35150) that is before
Yanmar reduced the height of the canister.

Karl
