[C320-list] Engine alignment

Chuck,

I don't understand what you mean by two bearings. Are you talking about the
stuffing box?

Thanks Larry. If the shaft is not centered in the log, is there anything
that I can do about this? It seems to me that the two bearings on the shaft
are not adjustable without some serious fiberglass work.

Slotting the engine mounts a little more is probably worth a try as I
probably only need a little more room at the front of the engine.

Thanks again

Chuck,

I haven't experienced the problem you are having but have done enough

alignments to know exactly what you are talking about.

Be sure to check that the shaft is centered in the stern tube (shaft log).

With the coupling disconnected and separated about 1/4 -1/2 inch you can

move the shaft athwartships until it hits the sides of the log and tell if

it is centered. It may be that you are trying to align the engine to a

shaft that is not positioned correctly.

If this is not the problem another option would be to extend the slots on

the slotted plate if there is room rather than try to move the hole over a

little in the engine beds.

I spent several hours yesterday aligning my engine and shaft, but found that

I could not move the front of the engine far enough to port to get proper

alignment. The slots in the front motor mounts are bottomed out and there

is still a lot of horizontal misalignment. And I can't move the rear motor

mounts to starboard and still get the shaft to align.

Has anyone else experienced this? It seems like the shaft is angled to

port. If I drill new holes for the motor mounts, is there a backer

underneath the fiberglass that I can tap into? Thanks for any suggestions
