It really is worth taking apart b4 you replace it.  I did and found several pieces of junk that had been ingested and kept the valves from seating.  Easy fix, just pay attention to how the valves go back together or you will get to open the pump up again, like I did.

Take it apart, check for debris, and if it is the pump, you can get a kit at West Marine to rebuild it.
What you described sounds like debris, it's free to clean it out and will, in the long run, take less
time. Once you have it out and you still want to replace it, just checking it takes no more time.
I've been through this -- more than once. Put in a filter.

I belive the pump will run either way. Check your  pos.  & neg. feed, maybe 
its wired backwards.
