Good question. I've never replaced mine, either, but I'm sure I was told by
someone that you can. Probably from Harken. I'll send them a note and ask.

Where do you get the little red clips? Mine broke about 7 years ago and it
has been on my list, but not really a priority.

I left it on and occasionally actually use it. Whenever we hoist a spinnaker
we need to free up the winch to use it for the halyard. This is usually done
when we're sailing close hauled, so it's a pretty simple matter to just put
downward pressure on the mainsheet as you ease the line on the winch. It'll
hold there with no problem while we get the spinnaker halyard ready. When we
are ready to fall off we simply yank the mainsheet out of the jam cleat and
the release of power in the mainsail makes it very easy to turn. If you fall
off before releasing the sheet it's hard to turn the boat as the main wants
to drive it to weather. I'd leave them and simply add the Harken 280
offshore aluminum cam cleats. You can buy those little red clips to go on
the jam cleats, and they'll keep the mainsheet from accidentally finding
their way into the cleat.

Thanks Denny. Did you remove the jam cleats when you installed the cams, or
did you leave them installed. It looks like I will have to apply heat to
the jam cleat to remove it, as there is some pretty serious adhesive between
it and the mounting area.

The jam cleats are really only there in case you need to remove the
mainsheet from the winch to put a halyard temporarily on it. The boat's
delivered with a little clip that you can flip over top of the jam cleat to
keep the sheet from accidentally falling into the cleat. This clip usually
breaks off in the first day or two.

I've placed two large Harken cam cleats at the aft edge of the cabin top
directly behind where the mainsheet exits the line organizer on each side.
My mainsheet is double ended so it can be trimmed from either side. This
works very well when sailing off the wind and at the dock but you need the
winch to pull the sheet tight enough to control sail shape when sailing
upwind.

Has anyone upgraded the mainsheet jam cleat to some other system? My wife
hates the jam cleats, and I must admit I'm not a big fan, either. I have
been thinking about installing rope clutches. One of my concerns is that
the space on the mounting area is a bit limited on theside where the jam
cleat is located. Does anyone have Aany thoughts or experiences to share?

Thanks,
