Jerry - I heard that advice also about cutting the hole in the box and
placing it over the winch but did not bother.  Just move slowly and work
inboard with all body movements.  The first time I tore apart the winches, I
did it on dry land due to concerns about where parts might fly off to.  I
have the confidence now, after doing so several times, to do it under sail
if I had to...but fortunately don't see a need to test myself on that one! -

Thanks Allan, I've also been told it's a good idea to cut a hole in the 
bottom of a box so that it will fit over the winch, that way if any parts or

springs come loose hopefully the will stay in the box instead of going over 
the side and into the water.
