[C320-list] Shore Power

Henry LeSieur hankles at sbcglobal.net

I had to replace both power inlets this past Fall. A fellow C-320 owner alerted me as he had the same problem. He read (somewhere) that degradation of the wiring in the inlet will occur if one removes the power cord from the vessel prior to removing it from the shore power outlet. This is particularly true if you have two inlets - one for the house and one for A/C. The A/C inlet was in much worse condition than the house inlet.

Thanks to all for the heads-up on this particular problem.
Due to the close proxmity of my hull number (690), I made a point of
inspecting my Hubbell connector today.
The 3 male prongs were all corrosion-free and the 3 wires all appeared OK
from the lazarette. I pulled the 4 screws attaching the receptacle to the
transom to give the wires a closer inspection, just to be sure. All is OK
(for now) but I intend to add this to my annual inspection list. I also
suggest checking the power cord for damaged prongs, corrosion at either
end, and a damaged cover, at least annually.
I don't run air conditioning and have fairly low AC current requirements,
so that also may be a factor.

Tesoro (hull #79) is dripping water from the outboard cabin light that's
almost directly over the chart table. I presume it's entering through the
point where the shroud is attached at the deck, but I thought I'd run that
theory by this group before drawing conclusions. My assumption is that the
wiring runs under that point.

Thanks for any clarification you might be able to provide.

I had a similar leak. Use cpt tolleys creeping crack filler from West Marine
on the chain plates and any other suspects. It does the job.

Hmm. Three of the four opening ports in the main cabin have small
leaks I haven't been able to locate. (Drench them with a hose for 20
minutes - nothing. But given some rain...)

I wonder if it is worth trying this stuff before pulling and re-
bedding them? Any thoughts?

cpt trolleys really does a great job--I have used it several places and it works. However the opening ports pose a different problem---the opening is large enough to need more than cpt trolleys. An earlier e-mail indicated that the design of the ports is a problem---the outside rim is a two part rim with the two parts meeting in the horizontal center (right and left side centers) The easy seal is to use caulk (life caulk) to fill the hole on both sides of the outside of the port--it works or worked on my hull #219---I had used cpt trolleys prior and it helped but did not eliminate the leak for a period of time. We had the same problem when we first bought our boat. You may need to
replace the gaskets seals around . Overtime, the gaskets become compressed
and are no longer effective. We replaced all of our main cabin, and one in
the aft cabin, opening port light gaskets and that solved the leak problem.
We avoid over tightening the cam type latches and just tighten enough to
make the seal.

If you can manage it without the risk of water (or animal) intrusion,
leaving the ports open over the winter will allow the gaskets to
remain expanded.

This is ringing a bell here.

At the San Diego annual meeting, Lewmar came and gave a presentation on
these hatches and how to adjust the catches and tension on the different
versions.

There were a couple different styles of side-opening hatch. If you look
from the outside at the "squarish" version of these hatches you'll see Black
joints in the aluminum frame. One version of the hatch has a pair of black
horizontal rubber joints on the SIDES of the hatch frame, while others have
(I think?) a single vertical joint at the BOTTOM of the frame.

The Lewmar guy indicated that the hatches with the joints on the SIDES had a
tendency for the rubber to dry out and leak. Problem is that it has no
where to go, so it pools inside the frame until it fills up enough to leak
out inside the boat. Someone with a better memory might know for sure, but
I believe he said that that rubber gasket that seals these frame parts can
be replaced which will fix the leak.

I'll wager a bet that if your hatches are leaking but it doesn't appear to
be the glass/gasket seal leaking that it's that external rubber seal.

Call Lewmar Tech support. They already know all the tricks for
finding/fixing/adjusting these hatches.

Dick Walker can give you the name/number of the tech rep that came and did
that fantastic seminar for us.

Cheers!

That was the solution on my previous boat. I've avoided here so far
just because the seals *appear* to be in good shape - but I could well
be wrong. Thanks.

My joints are indeed on the side.

The obvious answer - and I hadn't thought of it.

Thanks.

About 3 times per year, I clean the rubber gaskets thoroughly with Armor
All. The theory is that the Armor All prevents the gaskets from contracting
plus keeps dirt and grime to a minimum. In 6 years of doing this, no leaks.
The idea came from this list sometime ago - Joe Revak I believe.

Bruce,

Did you get an email of the Regatta Survey Questionnaire in the past 2 days
with the subject line:
"Catalina 320 Regatta and Bylaws Survey"?

Some of you may have had them filtered into your Junk mail.

If anyone on this list didn't get an email of the survey and wants to, paste
the following link into your browser and fill out the form:
