If I understand the problem correctly, try filling the screw hole with bits of wood, such as from wooden matches, and screw the screws into the wood.

the plastic rod holding the hinge together on my boat has started to come out and one of the hinges is loose now, I've tried to just push/tap it back in but it seems like it does not want to move, has anyone else had a similar experience and able to offer some advice?
