Have you checked for blow-by at the injectors?  My injector hold down bolts
were a little loose and there was a track of soot near one of the injectors.
I've seen another C320 where the whole compartment was sooty for the same
reason.

David - The control panel lowers very easily.  I had to do this on Sea
Shadow as the engine kill t-handle would not clear the bottom of the
autohelm motor.  Looking forward to seeing #4 at the regatta! - Allan Field

I just spent three days helping a new member of our "club" bring his
just purchased C320 (#614) home from Washington DC to just outside
Baltimore, MD.  About 40 miles as the crow flies but almost 200nm by
water. It was a wonderful trip. (Warren & Bruce, I'll work on getting
him to come to the regatta.)

Along the way I fell in love with his Raymarine ST4000+, and am
thinking about buying one. However, when I went down to my boat
today, I realized that my control panel on the pedestal looks to be
too high (I never would have said that about it before!) to
accommodate the wheel attachment for the autopilot. Has anyone put an
autopilot on an older boat like mine, & how did you do it? Can you
lower the control panel?

Thanks,

Bruce and Pat,
Thanks for your ideas. I like them.
I did inspect the muffler and couldn't see any cracks.
I'm also sure it isn't coming in from the stern. The smell
is way tood strong as soon as you enter the master cabin.
Thanks again,
Paul

Paul,
I haven't dealt with that and I'm assuming you've inspected the water lift
muffler for any possible cracks, seems to be a common failure mode.? If you
have to build up the fitting coming out of the hose I'd look for some hose
that is ID 1.75" and OD 2.0".? Cut it the length of the fitting coming out
of the water lift muffler and then reinstall original hose with a couple of
hose clamps - tight.

All,
?
I've been smelling exhaust inside the boat. I sent the elbow off for some
work, and after wards pressure tests say?there is
no leak. Reinstalled but I still have the problem. Yesterday I took out the
entire system, found some damage under the
clamps so I replaced the section between the elbow and the muffler. I cut
off about 1 1/2 inches of the section going
out the back. One thing I discovered is the exhaust hose is two inches but
the fitting on the back side of the muffler is
something less, probably 1 3/4. I reinstalled everything but I swear the
smell is still there. Tomorrow I plan to install
a CO2 DETECTOR. Can the muffler fitting be brought up to 2 inches, and how
would that be done? Or, can the 2 inch
hose be changed out to 1 3/4 without causing any problems. Has anyone dealt
with this?
?
Thanks,
?

Are you saying the whole unit came out with the black network and transducer
wires on the back; or, did the face of the instrument come off the back of
the instrument?

I believe the instrument is not intended to be held in-place by glue,
although the installer may have used silicone to seal the interface.  I
think on mine, there are small black thumb wheels with a threaded rod in the
center that are used to hold the unit tightly from behind.  Perhaps yours
were lost along the way and the "glue" was an expedient.  I may even have a
couple of those screws.

My water temp too, doesn't register correctly - never did.  I recently had a
problem with intermittent operation of the speed transducer.  Since
Raymarine no longer supports the ST50 instruments I went to Airmar on the
internet and was able to purchase the paddle wheel replacement kit.  Airmar
was very helpful.  I can do without the water temp.

My ST50 Wind Instrument shows the direction just fine; but, the
apparent/true wind displays only very seldomly.  I attribute this to a bad
connection, probably at the mast/deck joint; but, have not yet done a
serious troubleshooting.

I've recently had to repair the ST4000 auto pilot wheel ring, and that was
fun.  I had to remove the clutch handle that is held on with a "roll pin" or
some call them tensioning pins.  The smallest I could find is 1/16".  I
surmise, since the unit was built by Autohelm, a British company, that the
hole size in the clutch axel is probably 1.5mm, slightly smaller than 1/1
6".  After I drilled out the hole to 1/16", the roll pin went in rather
smoothly.

Want to hear more?  Oh, the joy of owning a 15 year old sailboat.

I've accepted the fact that the auto pilot and instruments will have to be
replaced in the next 2-3 years, assured that at some point a needed ST50
part will just not be had.  I'm hoping by then the NEMA-2000 stuff will have
settled down and there will be ample choices.  The idea of a single network
cable with local drops is appealing.  The issue of connecting mast-head
transducer(s) needs more work.  I'll be watching the NEMA-2000 offerings at
the boat shows.

I get the daily e-mails from AskJackRabbit.com and find these very helpful
for following the new instrument news and other technical issues.

When I went down to my boat today and pulled the plastic cover off of my
Autohelm speedometer, the unit came off of the pedestal, hanging by its
wires. It appears that the glue on the back just gave up. Is there anything
special about the glue holding the speedometer in? I'm a little shy about
putting something too serious on the back of it if it is ever necessary to
pull it out to access the wires to it.

Also, my outside water temperature gauge is stuck on 104 degrees. I can't
find my instructions, is there a way to reset this?

Thanks,

Hi John,

We also found that a 16.5k BTU reverse cycle unit does the trick here on the
south side of Lake Erie.  We experience a fair amount of days that are 90+
degrees and over 90% humidity and yet we sail early spring and late into the
fall spending many nights each season in the Western Lake Erie Islands area.

We had the AC-heat unit mounted in the port side cockpit storage locker
right behind the bread box with the 4 x 8 inch teak air exit grill into the
main cabin above the bread box with a very short insulated vent pipe so
there is not loss of air temperature from the unit to the cabin. No need for
any other venting and the unit normally runs at the lowest fan setting
automatically with periodic cycles with the air and heat easily reaching
into the V-berth while cycling into the aft cabin to the return air.

By mounting the unit in the port side cockpit locker we found that the 14
inch square intake grill was now at our feet in the aft cabin rather than
having the compressor and fan noise and draft nearer our pillows if we
mounted the unit in the starboard aft corner locker.  In addition to the
noise reduction I may continue to access the storage as well as the fuel
tank in the starboard aft corner locker when I need to draw some fuel from
the bottom of the tank every few years to cut down on the sludge build-up.

I did have the installer place a teak grill in the aft cabin door to allow
air to circulate to the intake grill.

I built a locker shelf over the unit so I retained a good amount of storage
in the port cockpit locker. We did not miss the loss of storage space in the
port side locker that was so deep and inconvenient to use since we often
stored common access items above longer term storage items that found there
way deeper in that locker and now we simply leave those items in a dock box.

Total cost ran around $3,700 for professionally installed Marine Air unit
with digital controls. Some 4 years ago Marine Air had the longest warranty
on the compressor.

The AC/Heat unit was the best creature comfort addition to the boat since we
grew tired of hauling out the 5000 BTU CruiseAir unit that was totally
inadequate.  The cabin now cools in a matter of minutes instead of hours and
even when the companion way is left open.

Only regret is that we did not install the unit when we purchased the boat.

We are in Oklahoma, gets very hot and humid...therefore, 16,500 BTU reverse

cycle unit located under aft seat, starboard side.  Outlets in  main berth
(coming in from the port locker), the largest is over the bread box,  and in

forward berth.  Ducting runs directly to the main birth and over the
refrig...another line goes up under the storage tray that runs along the
port  side to the
forward cabin.

Hi,
Just back from a Chesapeake sail trying to using our asymetric chute.

We have the tack block mounted at the end of the anchor holder where the
bale is mounted to that captures the anchor.

We are running the tack line  INSIDE the pulpit to the block since it is aft
of the pulpit front and we feel that its not the best place.  And the tack
line rubs on the pulpit when the wind is light

1. Has anyone mounted a block on the front of the pulpit just above the bow
light?  I feel that the front of the pulpit is more forward than the anchor
roller and the tack line would not rub on the inside of the pulpit.

2. Is the pulpit strong enough to withstand the pull that a tack line will
have when the wind starts to gust or blow near 10 knots?

3. If anyone has done this, what kind of mounting did you use for the block
to keep it standing up?

I run my tack line from the tack of the sail inside the bow pulpit to a
block that's attached to the bail on the anchor roller (sounds like yours),
and back to the cockpit through a couple of padeyes. Also attached to the
tack is an ATN Tacker (http://www.atninc.com/tacker.html). The Tacker is a
plastic collar that slides up and down on the furled headsail, keeping the
tack of the sail from falling off to leeward as the tack line is eased for
sailing farther off the wind. The Tacker also keeps the tack line from
chafing on the bow pulpit and it keeps the sail away from the navigation
lights on the bow pulpit that I'm convinced are a serious threat to my
spinnaker. An alternative to the Tacker is the Parrel Bead solution from
Neil Pryde Sails (http://www.sailingsource.com/neilpryde/store/beads.htm).

Subject: [C320-list] Asymetric Chute Tack Block

Hi,
Just back from a Chesapeake sail trying to using our asymetric chute.

You can put a 2-3" eye splice in the jib sheet and pass the line through the
clew, then through the eye splice and back to the turning block. There's a
right and left version of this that will be obvious when you do it. One way,
it hangs up on the shroud, the other way it doesn't. The only down side to
this is that you can't change jib sheets without a lot of aggravation
running the tail all the way forward, but it is cleaner.

Bowline...no problem catching...might be a timing issue. Try sheeting in a
little slower as the boat powers up.

Irv,
I would not trust the pulpit to take the shock loads that occur when the
spinaker collapses and then refills.  Also there are times when we are
sailing as hard on the wind as the sail will let us and you want the tack as
low as possible.

While the circuit breaker will protect the line fro catastrophic failure
(fire) it will not insure that the instruments are seeing 12 volts.  It is
quite possible to place a additional current load at the helm that will not
trip the breaker but will cause a significant voltage drop across the line.
The result is your instruments could reset or go off line till the voltage
is restored.
The best but not the easiest solution is a separate circuit with the proper
gauge line.  Failing that a the addition of a fused socket that insures only
low current items are plugged in should keep the instruments running
reliably.

Bruce,

While I agree that adding a low rating fuse to the additional power port
will protect the instruments from a "brown out", I wouldn't think that
anything plugged into the engine pod should be drawing a lot of current. The

problem with fuses is you need to carry spares in case one blows, which is
why I would go with the breaker alone.

I have a Mermaid 16500 installed starboard side above the fuel tank. Control
panel at nav station and intake in aft birth with hole cut direct to unit.
Vents are above refrig and port side cabin wall and in head behind sink.
Would do 12500 if to do over so my 2000 honda would run it. Now I have to
use 2 hondas for starting it.

We've thought of A/C; haven't jumped yet.  As I follow this thread, I
have some questions of my own.
Doesn't the Honda 2000 generator make about as much noise as the A/C
units in question?
How long does a tank of generator fuel last when running such an A/C
unit?  Overnight?
Why use a generator at all, unless you're on a mooring?
