If your exhaust is running "wet" then this probably is not what is causing your overheating but I had an experience where after running fine for a short period my exhaust went suddenly dry (starts to sound a bit more like a V-twin motorcycle than a small diesel engine).?? I did my trouble shooting and checked from raw water intake through the cooling system.?? The impeller looked new - no wear at all.??? I finally gave up and posted a request for help on this board.?? A member from Australia posted a response that he too had the same problem and his perfect looking impeller had separated from it's bronze core so it was not rotating when belt driven.?? I checked my impeller and that was indeed the case.?? In my situation the impeller would not spin at all or very little.?? I could see the possibility of the impeller spinning a little due to friction on the core but not spinning enough to supply adequate water flow.?? It's an easy check, just catch the notch on the inside of the impeller core with a screw driver and try to move the blades around it.? If they move separately then through that impeller out.

Good luck!

I had the seal in the raw water pump begin to leak this year. 10th season
on the pump. Maybe with the water leaking in the area of the forward engine
cover this might be the problem.. If the seal is worn, maybe the pump isn't
producing enough volume of sea water to cool down engine. Is engine
anti-freeze OK?

Subject: [C320-list] engine overheating

This past Sunday, the engine was running hot and eventually the temp alarm
atarted sounding. I shut her down and waited to open the engine hatch.

I noticed a little bit of water seeping out from under the forward engine
compartment hatch, and when I looked, I could not identify where it came
from.

I troubleshooted from the raw water inlet to the water pump - all is fine.
Should my next step be to look at the mixing elbow? I've read that deposits
can build up, leading to less flow and ultimatley overheating.

I'm worried because thw elbow is covered in heavy duty Al foil, presumably
because the previous owner found or assumed a leak...I'm scared as to what I
might find!

  Any thoughts/tips/ideas?

  Thanks!
