[C320-list] I have a hot stuffing box...

I've heard that line before somewhere. My box is hot too. I don't think
you've toasted the GFO packing. Try backing off the nut a little till the
box just drips, then hand tighten the nut. This is starting to sound sleazy.

Subject: [C320-list] I have a hot stuffing box...

... this is perhaps the lamest pick up line, ever...

Lisa and I purchased #828 at the end of last year,
and among 1,000 other "little" jobs, I repacked the
stuffing box with 3 rings of 1/4" GFO packing.

I could barely get the stuffing nut back on due to the
bulk of the stuffing, so I snugged it up a bit (with a
wrench - I know, a NO NO!) to be sure it was on. It
appears I overtightened as in the two times I've run
her (about an hour each, low rpms) the stuffing box
gets hot, almost too hot to touch. Each time I've
eased back on the locknut and stuffing nut.

A bit of black goo has come out at the end of the
stuffing box around the shaft.

Have I toasted the GFO packing?

Advice welcomed. Admonishments accepted... I feel so
novice... a 32' boat is so much bigger than a 25'
boat! I'm learning, and stubborn. We love her and
"this too shall pass". Like a gallstone perhaps, but
it will.

Thanks!
