It's an old thread now, but I wanted to thank everyone for the comments on
installing a remote microphone. I was able to bring the remote wiring
through the engine control box, and I drilled a new hole under the starboard
pedestal guard base to run the GPS wiring. I never would have thought to
cut the mike wires without your suggestions. Only issue is that the remote
mike plug can't be unplugged since the engine control box is too thick. I
guess that I either need a thin retaining nut or I need to grind down the
plastic in the box.
Another question - Has anyone replaced the rub strip. That's my next
project and I don't know whether it's a big project or not.

Technology evolves so fast... Coming from the high speed PC design analysis
business, most PC-Boards made for these sorts of consumer products have a
conformal coating over them just to prevent copper corrosion and protect the
traces from the air, but don't have all the soldered terminal connections
coated. Some companies require specialty coatings over everything after
assembly as Chris mentioned.
My guess here is that by the time you start having problems because of salt
air, your grand-kids will be laughing at that antique dinosaur of a TV
you're sporting on your boat.

I work for an electronics manufacturer and we do conformal coating for some
of our customers. I wonder if the risk of opening the back of a flat screen
and having it coated is worth the risk?

The eight track I installed in my new boat still works--even if I do
not---however I cannot find any Garth Brooks tapes to buy.

Your hull, engine and mast need to last forever,
but electronics change faster than they corrode.
Unless it is going in the cockpit or salt water splashes around you a lot..
go for the standard stuff and sock away the savings for the next version
that comes along. Jimmy Buffet in "3D" and "smellovision" could be just
around the corner!

We are on our second flat screen LCD DVD-TV. The first one gave up the
ghost after only 2 years; it was the DVD assembly that stopped working. The
repair was more than the cost of a new one. But I don't know if it was the
marine environment that caused this. The new one has been on board for
about 3 seasons now but does come home in the winter. I left a Canon AE-1
camera on board for only two weeks about 15 years ago - the repair job to
that puppy was enormous. The first thing the guy said when he opened up the
camera was, "Has this been in a marine environment?"
