OK, i get it now. Makes sense that it helps with sail shape when furled, 
similar to the foam.

The rope isn't tapered, but it doesn't run the full length of the luff 
either. I don't recall how much it is short of the head and foot. Maybe 2 to 
4 feet on each end. I thought a second rope could be several feet short of 
the first to have the effect of the taper in the foam. They don't think it 
makes much difference. I might argue that after I get the Doyle 155 for our 
new boat and see how it looks furled to 135 or 110%, but the 155 on our 320 
looked good and it had a single rope.

  Hmm , interesting. The foam in my 135 is tapered with the "fat" part in 
the
  center tapering down to less foam near the head and the foot. It works 
well.

  Is the Doyle rope tapered to give even furling like the foam does?

that
  they switched from foam to rope several years ago.

    Does Doyle use a foam luff? I bought a new higher cut 135 from a local
    sailmaker, which has the foam luff. It furls so nicely with foam, keeps
    great sail shape down to about 80% or even less.
