[C320-list] Mast Tuning Tips?

Bryan,

Congratulations, you have broken the code on starting a new thread, and have
bought a superb boat. Not sure there is a way to end a thread once these
guys get started. OD is, as Chef Adam says, always correct, go big or stay
at home. There is no quicky rig tune if your mast is truly out of rig.
Catalina's mast rigging info packet for my boat is sketchy on detail, but
functionally correct. Since you said you are new to sailboats, I would
suggest that if you truly suspect the rig set up, call a rigger, be there
when he shows up, and pay attention to what he does. A good tuner can do his
thing in 3 or 4 hours. An improperly rigged mast, on a very windy day with
too much sail and the wrong guy at the helm, can literally come down. A mast
has to be in column, centered port and starboard, and straight up and down
fore and aft. For you racer guys (me too) disregard, as Bryan at this point
does not need rake or bend. The shrouds (lefty righty wires) should have
equal tension left and right, though not necessarily fore and aft. The
stays, front and rear will necessarily be equally tensioned because they
oppose each other. The forestay on my boat can't be tensioned without
disassembaling the furling unit, so there is more to this than meets the
eye. Rig tuning is, on race boats, truly an art, but no less important on a
breezy day, on a mom and pop boat.

Sorry new to the site. Not sure if this is how you start a new thread.
My Wife and I are the new owners of hull 32. I am also relatively new to
sailing. I was wondering if anyone out there had any tips on tuning the
mast. I read the article by Mark Yeager in the technical documents section
however this seems to be a bit more than I need right now. I was looking
for something simpler. The optimal set up can wait until later. If anyone
has any tips it would be most appreciated.

Best regards

Bryan
